Manhattan |
Words and Music (OS 1948) |
Mickey Rooney |
Originally from Garrick Gaieties (1925), which was intended as a two-show fund-raiser for the Theatre Guild's new playhouse. It was such a hit that it ran for 211 performances. This wasn't Rogers and Hart's first collaboration (that was Poor Little Ritz Girl in 1919), but it was the show that got them noticed and started their 26-show partnership. |

Too Good for the Average Man |
On Your Toes (Revival Cast, 1983) |
George S. Irving, Dina Merrill |
The revival of this 1936 dance-oriented show ran for a respectable 504 performances. The show was originally intended as a movie vehicle for Fred Astaire, who turned it down because it didn't offer him an opportunity to don his trademark top hat, white tie and tails. |
|
There's a Small Hotel |
These Charming People |
Joan Morris, William Bolcom |
Originally from On Your Toes, which made a star out of Ray Bolger and offered noted choreographer George Balanchine his first chance to work on a Broadway show (most notably the extended ballet number "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue"). |
|
Johnny One-Note |
Words and Music (OS 1948) |
Judy Garland |
Originally from Babes in Arms (1937). This is, literally, the classic "hey, kids, let's put on a show" story, but it boasts more Rogers and Hart hits than any other single show of theirs (aside from these three it also included "My Funny Valentine" and "I Wish I Were in Love Again"). Garland also appeared in the 1939 film version of the show with Mickey Rooney. |

Words and Music (OS 1948) |
Ann Southern |
Originally from Peggy-Ann (1926), the follow-up hit to 1925's Garrick Gaieties. Daring for it's time, the show largely takes place in the Freudian-inflected dream world of the title character. |
|
Falling in Love With Love |
Boys From Syracuse (Revival Cast 1963) |
Ellen Hanley |
Based on Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors. |
|
This Funny World |
Out on Broadway (OC 1996) |
Qwenten Schumacher |

Pal Joey (Studio cast, 1950) |
Vivienne Segal, Beverly Fite |
Segal starred two years later in a Broadway revival of Pal Joey which ran for 540 performances |
|
Bewitched |
The Rogers and Hart CD |
Joan Morris, William Bolcom |
Originally from Pal Joey (1940), this version includes both the original and reprise lyrics. Whitewashed for the 1957 film version starring Frank Sinatra, the original is based on John O'Hara's New Yorker short stories about the unprincipled night-club entertainer of the title. |
|
To Keep My Love Alive |
The Rogers and Hart CD |
Joan Morris, William Bolcom |
Originally from the revival of A Connecticut Yankee (1943), which retained only five songs from the 1927 original and added six new numbers, including this one, which was a showstopper for Vivienne Segal. This was also Hart's last song. His creative powers already waning from depression and alcoholism, Hart died of pneumonia on November 22, five days after the show opened. |
