Sweet Charity has music by Cy Coleman, lyrics by Dorothy Fields, and book by Neil Simon (loosely based on Fellini's film Nights of Cabiria) about Charity Valentine (Gwen Verson, in a legendary performance), a dance-hall hostess with a heart of gold and rather bad judgement in men. Stages St. Louis presents Sweet Charity through August 18, 2002 .
Hey, Big Spender Sweet Charity (OC 1966) Helen Gallagher, Thelma Oliver and the Girls A classic example of Bob Fosse's angular and idiosyncratic choreography. Which we can't show you on the radio.
You Wanna Bet Sweet Charity (OC 1966) Cy Coleman Composed for Sweet Charity but eventually cut from the show.
If They Could See Me Now Sweet Charity (OC 1966) Cy Coleman This and the prior cut are from an album Coleman recorded for Columbia in 1966
Mamma Mia! is the 1999 musical with a score of ABBA tunes from the '70s and '80s. The book, by playwright Catherine Johnson, is set on a Greek island where Sophie, who has been raised by her mother Donna (a former '70s "wild child", now a respectable hotel owner), is about to be married. Snooping in mom's diary, Sophie discovers that her father must be one of three of Donna's former lovers. She invites all three to her wedding on the assumption that she'll know her real dad when she sees him and complications (as they say) ensue. The USA tour plays the Fox Theatre in St. Louis through August 25, 2002. You can find my review of the show for KDHX here.
Mamma Mia Mamma Mia! (OC 1999) Siobhan McCarthy and Company Donna discovers that her daugher Sophie has invited three of Donna's ex-lovers to Sophie's impending wedding, on the assumption that one of them is her father. Donna realizes that one of the isn't as "ex" as she had thought.
Lay All Your Love on Me Mamma Mia! (OC 1999) Andrew Langtree, Lisa Stokke, Company Sophie and her fiancee Sky declare their love, joined by a scuba-equipment-wearing chorus (we're not making this up, you know!).
S.O.S Mamma Mia! (OC 1999) Siobhan McCarthy, Hilton McRae Donna and Sam try to renew their affection, but are blocked by old resentments.
What More Do I Need? Encore (2002) Sarah Brightman From Sondheim's 1955 show Saturday Night, which has had only one production in late 1997 in London. The recording was made for Brightman's album The Songs that Got Away, but was unreleased until now.
