| Outer Space |
The Fantasy Film Worlds of Bernard Herrmann |
Bernard Herrmann and the National Philharmonic Orchestra |
From the score for The Day the Earth Stood Still (1953), a science fiction classic that uses the appearance of a flying saucer in Washington DC for some barbed commentary on '50s cold-war paranoia. |
| The Thing Strikes
|
Space 3 (2001) |
City of Prague Philharmonic |
From the score for It Came From Outer Space (1953), based on a Ray Bradbury short story about aliens who crash-land in Arizona and assume the identities of local townspeople so they can make repairs without being detected - or so they think! |
| Desert Rendezvous
|
Space 3 (2001) |
City of Prague Philharmonic |
The score is assembled from pieces by various composers, but this and the previous piece are by Henry Mancini. |

The Science Fiction Album, V. 1 (2002) |
City of Prague Philharmonic |
From the score for The War of the Worlds (1953), which updates H. G. Wells' tale of an interplanetary invasion scuttled by microbes. |

City of Prague Philharmonic |
Speaking of microbes... |

Signs (OS 2002) |
Orchestra conducted by Pete Anthony |
The score of this M. Night Shyamalan film is by James Newton Howard (remixes of which can be downloaded at the movie web site). It's a creepy story of an alien invasion seen from the point of view of one rural family, headed by Mel Gibson as a former minister who lost his faith when his wife will killed in a freak accident. |
| Boarding Up the House
|
Signs (OS 2002) |
Orchestra conducted by Pete Anthony |
The film turns out to be as much about Gibson's crisis of faith as about hostile aliens, who we (and the characters) don't actually see until nearly the end of the movie. |
| End Title Suite
|
Cinema Century (2000) |
City of Prague Philharmonic |
From David Arnold's score for the rather overblown 1996 blockbuster Independence Day. |
