Granada Nessun Dorma (2003) Tito Beltrán, City of Prague Philharmonic conducted by Paul Bateman Beltrán’s disc modestly refers to him as “the amazing tenor” and while that might or might not be an exaggeration, he certainly displays an impressive voice on this collection of encores (“O Sole Mio”, “Santa Lucia”, “Ave Maria” and so on) and popular operatic selections (e.g. the title track, which everyone and his dog seems to have recorded). Whether we really need another disc of this material is another question, or course. See www.titobeltran.com for more information on the singer.
Raise the Roof Colored Lights (2003) Deborah Gibson, orchestra conducted by Ron Abel Gibson isn’t exactly a Big Name, but she has her share of major roles on Broadway (Eponine in Les Miserables, Sally Bowles in the revival of Cabaret) and in national tours (Fanny Brice in Funny Girl). See www.deborah-gibson.com for more information. This disc offers a nice mix of old and new show tunes. This is one of the newer one’s from Andrew Lippa’s short-lived The Wild Party.
Colored Lights Colored Lights (2003) Deborah Gibson, orchestra conducted by Ron Abel This one is from another show that didn’t last all that long: Kander and Ebb’s The Rink, which starred Chita Rivera and Liza Minnelli.
The Summer Knows On My Way to You (2003) Leslie Uggams Uggams has been a star on stage and screen since her debut as a child star on 1950s TV. She went on to appear in supporting and starring roles in a number of TV series and mini-series, including Roots, for which she won an Emmy. A Julliard graduate, her starring roles on Broadway include Hallelujah, Baby! (for which she won a Tony in 1968), Blues in the Night and Jerry’s Girls
What Are You Dong the Rest of Your Life? On My Way to You (2003) Leslie Uggams, Michel Legrand This disc is subtitled “The Songs of Alan and Marilyn Bergman”, but a more accurate one might be “The Lyrics of Alan and Marilyn Bergman”, since the music is by various composers. Over half the tracks have music by Michel Legrand (including these two)
I Get a Kick Out of You Andrea Marcovicci Limited Edition (2003) Andrea Marcovicci Marcovicci is selling this limited edition of her new Cole Porter CD at concert dates of her new show So in Love – The Love Songs of Cole Porter. Marcovicci played St. Louis November 10th through the 16th.
