| Talking Christmas - Cool Yule |
Holiday in Plaid (2003) |
The Plaids |
This new release features selections from Plaid Tidings, a
holiday musical revue from the creators of Forever
Plaid. Both shows feature the fictitious '60s "guy group" The
Plaids, who are an obvious homage to the male quartets (such as The Four Aces,
the Four Freshman and the like) the flourished in the late '50s and early '60s.
This recording features members of the Pasadena
Playhouse cast, which is where the Plaid shows originated. |
| My Favorite Time of Year |
My Favorite Time of Year (2003) |
Peter Cincotti |
This is one of two cuts on a holiday CD single (the other is
"My Favorite Things" from Sound of Music) from jazz singer Cincotti.
He wrote this one, which is a celebration of the Big Apple at Christmas time. |
| The Christmas Song |
The Christmas Song (2003) |
Stacey Kent |
Here's another holiday CD single, this time featuring two cuts
from Kent's much-praised The Boy Next Door CD along with a new recording
of the Mel Torme-Robert Wells holiday classic (which most folks apparently know
as "Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire"). |
| Veni Immanuel |
Ancient/Modern (1999) |
Orchestra and chorus conducted by Anne
Dudley |
This Philip Glass-style
treatment of the ancient Latin carol is by noted British film composer Anne Dudley,
whose credits include American History X, The Full Monty and The
Crying Game along with assorted concert works, including Music and Silence,
commissioned by the BBC Concert Orchestra, where she has been the composer in
residence (or "in association" as they say in Britain) since 2002. |
| Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas |
Holiday Pops! (2003) |
Anne Hampton Callaway,
Philly Pops conducted by Peter
Nero |
Just in time for Christmas, this new release features the usual
collection of seasonal favorites. Callaway's contributions, in addition to this
hit from Meet Me in St. Louis, include "I'll be Home for Christmas"
and her own composition, "Christmas Lullaby". Pianist/composer/conductor
Nero has appeared with numerous orchestras all over the world. Locally he has
appeared with the St. Louis Symphony and Compton Heights Concert Band. |
| Mrs. Santa Claus |
Mrs. Santa Claus (1996) |
Angela Lansbury |
Mrs. Santa Claus was a made-for-TV musical (now available
on DVD) with songs by Jerry Herman
(Mame, Hello Dolly, La Cage aux Folles), costumes by Bob
Mackie, choreography by Rob Marshall (Chicago) and an all-star cast that
included Charles Durning and Terrence Mann. In the title cut, the title character
decides to assert her independence from her legendary husband. |
