Giant Toad Dear Friends (1970) Firesign Theatre This week only, a free Bozo Squeaker when you show your FM88 membership card.
Mrs. Kwan - Mom Leaves The Cat in the Hat (OS 2003) Orchestra conducted by David Newman The studio hoped this overblown version of the Dr. Seuss story would be a holiday blockbuster; it turned out to just be a bust.
Fun, Fun, Fun The Cat in the Hat (OS 2003) Mike Meyers Newman is the son of noted film composer Alfred Newman; his brother Thomas has also entered the family business as has Alfred Newman's nephew Randy (after a successful career as a songwriter and performer). David Newman's recent scores include Bowfinger (1999), Galaxy Quest (2000), Ice Age (2002) and How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days (2003).
Fun, Fun, Fun Milligan Preserved Spike Milligan, unidentified singer I just couldn't resist the segue to this classic bit of British silliness
The Battle Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (OS 2003) Orchestra conducted by Christopher Gordon and Richard Tognetti Based on author Patrick O'Brian's series of sea-faring novels, the movie is set during the Napoleonic Wars. Russell Crowe is Captain "Lucky" Jack Aubrey, renowned as a fighting captain in the British Navy, and Paul Bettany is ship's doctor Stephen Maturin. Their ship, the H.M.S. Surprise, is suddenly attacked by a superior enemy. With the Surprise badly damaged and much of his crew injured, Aubrey is torn between duty and friendship as he pursues a high-stakes chase across two oceans, to intercept and capture his foe. The score is by Iva Davies, Christopher Gordon and Richard Tognetti, with a sprinkling of classical pieces by Mozart, Corelli, Boccherini and Vaughn-Williams, among others.
Red Warrior The Last Samurai (OS 2003) Orchestra conducted by Blake Neely Here's the concept: Tom Cruise is a white American guy who reminds some Japanese warriors of the Real Meaning of the Samurai code. It's more evidence that drug abuse is still widespread in Hollywood. The score by the prolific Hans Zimmer (his credits include scores for Backdraft, Driving Miss Daisy, Gladiator, Hannibal, Black Hawk Down, Pearl Harbor, A League of Their Own and Thelma and Louise) is a real winner, however. The Taiko drumming on this cut is by Emil Richards.
Duke of Madness Motors Dear Friends (1970) Firesign Theatre Another pause for a hallucinatory cause.
The Cooler The Cooler (OS 2003) Instrumental combo lead by Mark Isham The soundtrack for this drama about professional gamblers is a mix of original tracks like this one by jazz composer Isham and pop standards by a mix of singers, including some members of the cast.
You're Getting to be a Habit with Me The Cooler (OS 2003) Paul Sorvino, instrumental combo lead by Mark Isham Sorvino actually does a pretty respectable job with the 1930s standard by Harry Warren and Al Dubin.
Kunya Sobé Mystère (1994) Elise Gonin, Nathalie Gauvin, City of Prague Philharmonic This is the music (composed by Renè Dupèrè) for Cirque du Soliel's show Mystère. As with all of their music, the songs are written in their own private language.
