| Thunderbirds are Go! |
Thunderbirds (OS 2004) |
Orchestra conducted by Nick Glennie-Smith |
Hans Zimmer provides the score for this live-action film version
of the 1960s sci-fi/adventure series Thunderbirds, in which all the characters
were portrayed by marionettes. |
| The Hood |
Thunderbirds (OS 2004) |
Orchestra conducted by Nick Glennie-Smith |
The Hood is the Thunderbirds' arch-enemy from the original TV series. Here
he's played by Ben Kingsley. |
| Century 21 March |
Thunderbirds 2 (2004) |
Studio orchestra conducted by Barry Gray |
This is the second volume of music from the original TV series. The show has
inexplicably developed a cult following over the years. |
| Dangerous Game |
Thunderbirds 2 (2004) |
Barry Gray, piano; studio orchestra conducted by Barry Gray |
Veteran film and TV composer Barry Gray composed the music for
this and other Gerry and Sylvia Anderson shows. The Andersons were also responsible
for other kid shows like Supercar as well as the unintentionally funny
adult sci-fi drama Space: 1999. My opinions aside, however, the Andersons
and their creations are still "cool" to some folks. |
| Those We Don't Speak Of |
The Village (OS 2004) |
Hilary Hahn, violin; Hollywood Studio Symphony conducted by Pete Anthony |
James Newton Howard composed the score for this latest thriller
from M. Night Shyamalan (The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs). The plot concerns a village that lives in an uneasy truce with a mysterious
force that lives in the surrounding woods. Shyamalan was considered a pretty "cool" director after Sixth Sense,
but critical reaction to subsequent films has been - well - cool (and unjustifiably
so, IMO). |
| Sarabande |
Reel Chill (2004) |
City of Prague Philharmonic conducted by Paul Bateman |
From the score for the 1975 Stanley Kubrick film Barry Lyndon, the piece is by Handel
and is actually a set of variations on "La Folia" – a 16th-century tune which
has been a popular variation subject for composers from Bach to the present day.
The tune even has its own web site!. |
| Into the West |
Reel Chill (2004) |
City of Prague Philharmonic conducted by Nic Raine |
From Howard Shore's score for Lord of the Rings: The Return
of the King, the accompanies the scene in which Bilbo and the last of the
Elves depart from The Gray Havens. Reel Chill is a 2-disc set described
as a cinematic chill-out album; it's on Silva Screen. |
| Cool |
West Side Story (OS 1961) |
Tucker Smith, Company |
This is from a newly re-relased, digitally remastered version of the soundtrack (with bonus tracks, of course). Riff and the Jets try to keep “cool” after the deadly rumble with the Sharks. Don't recognize Tucker Smith's name? That's because he did the singing for Russ Tamblyn, who played Riff. |
