The The alt.fan.holmes FAQ list, Part 5
The Hounds of the Internet

Revised: Friday, 27-May-2005 20:24:07 MDT

[Thanks to John McGowan for this information]

This is a note on the Hounds of the Internet and how to join.
    -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

What it is:

A mailing list of (at this time, 1 March, 2002) 325 listed
subscribers from 18 countries who discuss Sherlockian matters.

                                -=-=-=-=-=-

If, before joining us, you would like to preview the sorts of discussions
in which we indulge, Les Moskowitz (known as "A Drunken Looking Groom"
among the Hounds of the Internet) is making the past week's postings
available on the Web at the URL:

              http://www.bcpl.net/~lmoskowi/holmes.html

                                -=-=-=-=-=-

How to use it:

Consider a club which produces a newsletter. It may have a
secretary and an editor for the newsletter. The editor may take
care of creating and mailing the newsletter out to a mailing list
provided by the secretary (and the mailing list provided by the
secretary may indicate whether the editor is to send out the
newsletter annually, or monthly or whatever). To get on the mailing
list, one would send a letter to the secretary, while to contribute
an article one would send a letter to the editor.

So, too, many mailing lists are handled through two addresses: let
me call them the secretary's address and the editor's address
(these are just facets of the list processor programme).

   SECRETARY:
This is the address to which you send requests to join
or leave the list, or to get information on the number
of current subscribers or to have the list mailed to you
in "nodigest" format (messages sent throughout the day,
rather than in one large message, sent each day).

For the Hounds of the Internet this is:

                       listserv@listserv.kent.edu

EDITOR: This is the address to which you send material which is
to be sent out to all subscribers to the list.

For the Hounds of the Internet this is:

                       hounds-l@listserv.kent.edu

(note: that is an l="L" in hounds-l)

                                -=-=-=-=-=-

SECRETARY address:

To get information on topics for which one can obtain help, send a
message to the SECRETARY address (the "listserv@listserv.kent.edu"
address) with a blank subject line and one line in the body of the
   message:

   info

To obtain a reference sheet of commands for the listserver, send a
message to the SECRETARY address with a blank subject line and one
line in the body of the message:

   info refcard

The reference card will tell you how to have information sent in
nodigest form (i.e. messages sent throughout the day) (the command
"set hounds-l nodigests"), how to obtain a listing of the current
subscribers (the command "review hounds-l") and most importantly how
to subscribe and unsubscribe to the list.

To start the two part subscription process to the Hounds of the
Internet, send a message to the SECRETARY address,
"listserv@listserv.kent.edu", with a blank subject line (*) and one
line in the message. That line being:

   subscribe hounds-l

[*: I keep saying "a blank subject line" for I have had troubles with
some mail list programmes that might parse the subject line and
have difficulty if an incomplete command were therein... a blank
subject line will work for this list, and, as it is safe, it is
       what I indicate above]

Send the message from the email address at which you wish to
receive the posts from the Hounds of the Internet (for example, if
you are on a freenet and GEnie, send the message from your freenet
account to avoid GEnie's charges). You will have to send subsequent
messages to reconfigure and unsubscribe from this same address.

                                -=-=-=-=-=-

EDITOR address:

The address "hounds-l@listserv.kent.edu" is the address to which you
send messages, NOT to configure the list, BUT to contribute to the
ongoing Sherlockian discussions. This is NOT the address to which to
send a message to unsubscribe, or reconfigure for nodigest format, or
to postpone messages if one goes on vacation (the address to
configure the mail list is the SECRETARY address). It IS the address
to which to contribute your Sherlockian thoughts.

In the above, "l" is a lower case "L" (NOT a "1" which is a "ONE") in
"hounds-l" (at one time, a person could not join the list because of
misreading that character!).

                                -=-=-=-=-=-

If you are on the net and are a fan of the Master, give us a try (you
can always unsubscribe later, and the reference sheet you receive in
response to the "info refcard" message to "listserv@listserv.kent.edu"
will tell you about unsubscribing as well as how to get a listing of the
email addresses of all current members of the Hounds of the Internet).

Hope to see you over in the Hounds!

[A note: I post this to get folks into the Hounds of the Internet, and
am willing to do what I can to help if you have problems... so
feel free to send me questions... but if you want a "good"
answer, you may want to get in touch with Steve Clarkson who
runs the mail list (sclarkson@comcast.net). In short...
if it is a question about the Hounds, feel free to ask me... if
it is a technical problem with the list... Steve is the person
         to whom to send e-mail]

What the heck!? If you want a daily dose of Sherlockiana (Holmesiana
for the Europeans)... join us! It's free! It's fun! It's Sherlock
Holmes!
