Babylon 5
here's a bunch of information about my favorite
TV show, Babylon 5,
which is now being issued on DVD (you can get all five seasons in boxed
sets at amazon.com, among other places, as well as the various TV movies). Babylon
5 aired between 1994 and 2000. It was the first TV series designed from
the beginning to tell a complete story and then end.
Babylon 5 tells the story of the last of the Babylon-class space
stations, created as a place for humans and aleins to meet and engage in commerce
and diplomacy. During the five-year story line, Babylon 5 becomes the focal point
for two major wars (one of which threatens the very survial of not only the human
race but nearly all the others as well) as well as a civil war with Earth, which
falls into fascism and xenophobia.
Created, produced and almost entirely written by science fiction writer J. Michael
Straczynski, Babylon 5 deals with issues of spirituality, individual
responsiblity, and the ultimate fate of the human race (one episode leaps forward
one million years in time to deal with the explosion of the sun and the evolution
of humanity).
While never more than a modest ratings success, the show quickly garnered a large and loyal cult following, especially on the Internet, where Straczynski was a regular presence on the rec.arts.sf.tv.babylon5 Usenet news group. In addition to the original series, a spinoff series (Babylon5: Crusade) ran for one season on the TNT network before Straczynski pulled it due to repeated attempts by TNT management to influence character development and story lines.
